Router Table - How to Use

Want to know how to use a Router Table? Here are tips to get the most from your router table.

Table Saw Tools

You do not need a miter channel. Typically, you slide your work along the fence. If using a miter channel, then the fence must be square to the miter channel. Why go to that trouble?

Table Saw Tools

You can create a jig to glide along the Fence. This automatically aligns the wood to get a square cut. You can make adjustment in profile and depth of cut. A Router Lift makes this easy.

A quality Router Table fence eases dust collection. Use your Router Table and Fence for simplicity and ease!

You should never put your work between the fence and the router bit. That is just asking for trouble.

Typically, you slide the wood from right to left (when looking at the fence from the front). That is an anti-climb cut. You make nearly all cuts this way.

If very careful, you can go a short distance in the opposite direction. But you must hold on tight to avoid kickback and/or injury. This climb cut gives cleaner edges, but you should only attempt it after a lot of experience.

Only do less than 15% of your work this way. You should only use shallow or light cuts. Do NOT take big cuts. Only do it when you hands are protected and away from the router bit.

How to use a Router Table to center edge-to-edge joints:

Have you ever wondered how to center edge-to-edge joints? You use this technique for making solid tabletops, wide panels, or even make edging to go around your router table top.

Let's use an actual example of oak edging on a MDF Router Table Top. The top is 1 1/8" thick. The oak edging is 1 1/8" thick.

How do we ensure a centered edge?Decide on the tongue dimension. You have a 1/4" slot cutter. You want the tongue thickness less than two times the cut. Therefore, the tongue thickness is slightly less than 1/2". We use a 1/4" depth of cut for this example. We want a tongue that is less than 1/2" in thickness. Therefore, we know that the rabbet on the Table Top is slightly more than 5/16" on both sides of a 1 1/8" thick piece. Rabbet the top with a rabbet bit with a bearing to produce a 1/4" rabbet. You don't want to take a lot during your first pass. Therefore, the depth of cut is set for 1/8" for your first pass. Set the fence so it is even with the bearing of the rabbet bit. Cut both top and bottom of the top. Take your time and go all the way around. Make sure the workpiece is flat on the Router Table Top. Or use the router on top of the workpiece. Measure the thickness of the tongue. If it is larger than 1/2", then adjust the depth of cut. A router lift makes this easy.Note: you rout both sides; therefore use one-half the adjustment for each side. Make your adjustment, rout the top and bottom again. The tongue's thickness is now slightly less than 1/2". Replace your rabbeting bit with your 1/4" slot cutter. I always disconnect the power source to the router before changing bits! Sit the rabbeted piece on the router tabletop near the slot cutter. Raise the Router so the bottom of the slot cutter aligns with the bottom of the tongue. You may need support if the workpiece is large. Set the depth of cut for the slot to around 3/16" initially. Now slot your Oak edging. Turn it over and slot again. Test the slot on the tongue. Is it too tight? If so, remember that you make two passes with the slotter. Only lower your slot bit by 1/2 of the dimension needed. By the way, the Porter Cable 7518 Router makes this a snap. Since the slot cut is 1/4", the second pass is not using the entire cutter. You get an exactly center slot that fits on the tongue. Once the slot (groove) fits on the tongue, you are ready to set your final depth of the groove. The final depth of cut is slightly more than 1/4" to allow for glue. Set your fence for this final depth. Remember - make two passes with the slotter. This gives you an exact fit.

You can use this method for any edge-to-edge joinery, such as tabletops, panels, large drawer fronts, and any time you want to join two-pieces. You get perfect alignment and a rock-solid joint.

Choosing the Right Carbide Saw Blade

This is the question that seems to come up with anyone who isn't the most advanced of users. There are so many options, so many designs and configurations it's overwhelming to some, especially those who never knew there were any choices.

Table Saw Tools

I'm going to try to clarify and simplify the selection process for you here. But first, I want to talk a little about the saw itself, since choosing the wrong saw can create real headaches when it comes to trying to buy replacement and specialty blades. Keep in mind not only the size of the saw, but the size of the arbor when selecting a new power saw. Or picking up an old one at a yard sale, estate sale, etc. There are some great old table saws out there, like the old, solid-as-a-rock Sears models that have ¾"arbor shafts, for example. Then there was the huge batch of Asian-made 10" miter saws on eBay with 1" arbors. With cheap OEM blades on them. When I saw those, I knew in a few months I'd be getting emails from folks looking for new blades for the bargain saws they bought - blades no one makes. I was right. And those bargain shoppers found out it's almost impossible to get blades off the shelf, that if they're lucky, they can get one bored to fit - at a price.

Table Saw Tools

Almost all power saws for the American retail market from about 8" to 10" come standard with a 5/8" arbor so that's what blades are made for. Anything 12" and larger comes with a 1" arbor. DeWalt makes some 12" miter saws that come with a reducer so you can use either arbor size and there are some 12" industrial double miters that (like Pistorius) that have a 5/8" shaft. But other than those, the standard arbor sizes are about written in stone so if you're shopping for a new saw, stick with them.

Okay, now about those blades...

Size (or Diameter)

This one may seem pretty obvious but once in a while I run across someone who wants to use a blade that's a different size than their saw (sometimes to save money, believe it or not). In most cases, I advise against it. First of all, there's the issue of clearance: a bigger blade won't likely clear the blade guard on a miter or radial arm or the throat plate on a table saw. A smaller blade won't give you the depth of cut.

Then there's what's not so plain to see: the design and geometry of the blade. Smaller saws run at higher RPM, the bigger the saw, the lower the RPM. Blades are designed to work in concert with the saw to give you optimal performance. Enough said about that.

Exceptions? Yes, most notably a dado. Most craftsmen will use an 8" dado on a 10" table saw and in fact, that's the only size most manufacturers make - with a 5/8" arbor bore. For the industrial market, a few companies like SystiMatic make a selection with larger sizes and 1" bore, but you'll need a pretty powerful, heavy saw to use it. A 10" SystiMatic dado weighs in at over 10 pounds and cuts a lot of material.

Another exception may be a highly specialized use, by a very knowledgeable professional, such as the one I heard about not long ago where they were using an 8" non-ferrous blade on a 10" or 12" table saw to cut aluminum plate. This was a blade designed for cutting extrusions, not solid aluminum, but these guys understand the geometry and use it to their advantage.

Purpose or Material

This one can be problematic if you're trying to buy a blade at Home Depot, Lowe's or ACE where all they sell is blades for cutting wood on hand-held saws (Skil, etc.), table saws and miter saws. But if you're shopping online or at a saw shop or good tool store, you can find specialty blades listed by purpose and material or ask someone who knows what you're talking about. And believe me, it's important to buy a blade designed for what you want to cut.

The price of a 24 tooth rip blade might look attractive but if you try to crosscut with it you won't be happy. Conversely, try to rip solid wood with a trim blade and you'll burn more wood than you cut. Use either blade to cut laminate flooring and you'll regret it when the top layer chips and the blade gets dull after three cuts. Laminate flooring, like Pergo, is very hard and has aluminum oxide in it - use an aluminum-cutting blade.

Manufacturers of saw blades that make blades for the professional make several different blades, with different configurations, for different uses and they identify them accordingly. There's no need for me to list them here, just stick with their recommendations and you shouldn't have any problems.

Type of Saw

Different types of power saws work best with blades made for them, and can work horribly (if at all) with the wrong blade. Using the example of a rip blade again: put a rip blade on a radial arm saw and even if you rotate the carriage to rip, it's going to want to lift the wood up off the table. Try to crosscut with anything vaguely resembling a rip blade (aggressive rake/hook angle) on that same saw and the whole carriage will try to "run" straight out at you. And the teeth will dig in and bind up your saw, tripping a breaker. Been there and done that one before I knew there was such a thing as a radial arm blade.

There are some types of blades, such as metal cutting blades, that can be used on and are recommended for all types of saws: table saw, miter saw and radial arm. Also some moderate-rake/hook combination blades. But a good rule of thumb is to just stick to what the manufacturer recommends. Buy a table saw blade for a table saw, a miter blade for a miter saw and a radial arm blade for a radial arm. When you think about it, you're not going to be cutting sheets of plywood on a miter or radial arm and you're probably not going to be mitering moldings on a table saw.

Tooth Count

Most people understand this one, for the most part. Generally speaking, you want a higher tooth count for cleaner, finish cuts, no matter what the material. You want fewer teeth for thicker material. Think of crown molding versus a 2 by 4. But if you're a hobbyist or homeowner doing odd jobs (like yours truly) you'll want a compromise blade, something you can use to reasonably cut a 2 by 4 or trim. On a miter saw or radial arm, 60 is a good number: 40 will tear out on trim work and 80 will have to fight through a 2 by 4. On a table saw, it's a little more forgiving: 40 to 50 is what you'll find on good combination blades, like the famous Forrest Woodworker, the TENRYU Gold Medal or the SystiMatic GP or Budke Combination. Virtually all manufacturers make combination table saw blades with tooth counts in this range so obviously it works.

By the way, as usual there are exceptions to this rule, especially when it comes to cutting plastics. And it depends on the type of plastic, whether it's hard and brittle, soft and with a low melting point or in between. Too many teeth will cause melting, which will load or gum up the teeth, thereby giving you a very poor cut. Not enough teeth, particularly in a hard plastic, will chip like crazy.

Tooth Design and Configuration

This is the one topic that can be most confusing and the one where you might, in some cases, find conflicting theories and/or claims from different manufacturers. Not to say one is right and the other is wrong, sometimes two completely different designs will work equally as well for a job. For example: SystiMatic uses a triple chip for plastic and TENRYU uses alternating top/alternating face. But I suppose I should simplify this before confusing you more.

Alternating Top Bevel - ATB This is by far the most common carbide tooth configuration, used for cutting solid wood, plywood and particle board. Further, there are several variations on the design that turn it into a specialist:

ATB w/Raker - ATBR Commonly called a "planer" blade or "planer combination" this combines usually four ATB teeth with one flat-top raker tooth for cleaning out the cut. It makes a true multi-purpose blade for your table saw, whether cutting plywood, crosscutting or ripping. A further variation on this one is a specialized plywood blade that uses more (like 10) ATB teeth for each raker.

Alternating Top Alternating Face - ATAF Very, very smooth crosscuts, with the outer edge of the tooth face chiseling the material as the blade cuts through. Also good for Melamine and veneered plywood. And as mentioned, TENRYU uses this for their plastic blades, too. Put one on a miter saw and get great cuts in wood and plastic, both. A variation on this one is to add a raker every few teeth to clean out the cut. It would be called ATAFR of course.

High or Steep Alternating Top Bevel - HATB This tooth shape, combined with a negative or neutral hook or rake angle, is used when you need a real knife-like edge to cut through Melamine or fine veneers. Also sometimes used with a positive hook for eliminating tear-out when crosscutting trim. The drawback to this type of tooth is that the quality of your cut depends on very pointed teeth and the more pointed they are, the faster they dull.

Triple Chip Grind - TCG This is a versatile tooth shape but the primary purpose is for cutting hard materials, like aluminum, laminate flooring, hardwoods and "solid surface" such as Corian. It incorporates flat top raker teeth with what look like a flat top teeth with the corners ground off at an angle. Without using sharp points like ATB or ATAF blades, a TCG blade will last much longer and handle the high impact of cutting hard stock. Manufacturers combine this shape with different hook/rake angles to specialize blades, from negative hook angles on non-ferrous blades to very aggressive hooks on rip blades. Drawback: may tend to tear out when crosscutting softer wood like pine or hemlock.

Flat Top Grind - FTG Flat top grind teeth, when used alone, have only one purpose: cutting wood with the grain. Ripping. And they've lost popularity in that use, too, as more manufacturers are using TCG and ATB teeth to give rip cuts smooth enough they don't need to be run through a jointer to glue up joints. But you've seen how other designs incorporate flat top teeth into doing their job well.

Others Some manufacturers use some highly specialized tooth shapes for their more specialized, exotic blades but we won't need to go into those here. They're far from basic and anyone who needs one of those probably knows more about it than anyone.

Rake or Hook Angles

When considering a blade for your particular type of saw, this is sometimes the most important consideration. And when combined with tooth shapes and configurations, the factor of rake angle can change a blade's entire purpose.

Where the saw is concerned, you don't want to use a positive hook on a radial arm (some manufacturers rate their combination blades for them but they're not aggressive hooks) and a miter saw works best with negative, neutral or moderately positive hooks - depending on what you're cutting.

Where material is concerned, generally harder materials require a negative hook or no (neutral) hook angle. And if wood is prone to tearing out when crosscutting, like softer conifer wood, a negative hook is better. So what is rake or hook angle? Lay a straight edge across a saw blade, intersecting the arbor hole and look at the relationship of the carbide tip to the straight edge. If the top of the tip leans toward the edge, that's a positive hook or rake. If it leans back away from it, that's negative. If it's parallel to it that's neutral or a zero hook.

I hope this clears up some confusion about selecting the right blade for the right machine, material and the right job. You want the best results, you need the right tool.

You can adjust the miter setting from 0 to 60 degreees to the left and 0 to 50 degrees to the right.

Tall and Compact Sliding Fences

The Dewalt DW718 miter saw fences can support up to 6-5/8 inch vertically nested crown molding and up to 6-1/2 inch set against the fence base molding. When you need to make bevel cuts, these fences can easily be slid out of the way. The tool's inventive designs of its belt drive and gear box makes for flawless vertical cutting.

Great Bevel Capacity

Bevel cuts can now be effortlessly made with the Dewalt DW718. You can set your bevel cuts from zero to forty eight degrees to both left and right side, with four positive bevel stops on both sides, situated at 0 degrees, 39.9 degrees, 45 degrees and 48 degrees. When you want to switch sides, there is no need to flip the wood. You simply have to pull a lever so that it is the saw that flips, making the job easier for you. This miter saw can provide cleanly bevel cut lumber measuring up to 2 by 12 at 45 degrees. In addition, the DW718 Dewalt can crosscut lumber of up to 2 by 16 in dimension when done at a right angle.

Compact and Light in Weight

Weighing only 53 pounds, the Dewalt DW718 offers something that other miter saws don't have: portability. Other than its light weight, it also has a carrying handle that you can use so you can move from one job site to another.

You can opt to purchase the Dewalt DW7187, an adjustable laser system that is compatible with your miter saw. This accessory produces a visible red laser line so that you can see clearly the cutting line. This way, even beginners can make precise cuts effortlessly.

You Can Build Your Own Circular Saw Table

Since circular saws are the portable version of a table saw, they are not meant to be fixed to a table. However, the portability can be a disadvantage if you are trying to make precision cuts such as miters or other angles. To help you make more accurate cuts, you can build a circular saw table in your own shop.

Table Saw Tools

Step 1

Table Saw Tools

Gather your materials which include a 3/4" thick medium density overlay (MDO) in a 36"X16" sheet, a 36"X8 1/2" piece, a 36"X1" piece, and two 36"X1 1/2 " pieces, a pencil, ruler, jigsaw, eight strips of 1"X2" wood, nails, hammer, drill, 1/4" and 1/2" drill bits, screws, circular saw, 1/2" dowel, speed square, and 1/4" carriage bolt.

Step 2

Mark the midpoint 3/4" in from the edge on the long side of the 36"X16" MDO.

Step 3

Using the ruler, mark a radius from this midpoint on that front edge. Next, draw a straight line 10 inches from and parallel to the back edge.

Step 4

To cut out the table that you just marked, use the jigsaw to cut down the 10" line, around the radius, and down the 10" line on the other side. You now have the shape of the table.

Step 5

Flipping the table to its back, nail six strips of the 1"X2" wood to all of the straight edges as the support for the table.

Step 6

Go back to the original midpoint mark on the topside and drill a 1/2" hole in which the dowel will be placed to serve as the pivot for the arm.

Step 7

Down from the hole on this topside, attach two more 1"X2" strips 10 inches long to serve as the fence for the guide.

Step 8

Take the two pieces of MDO that are 36"X1 1/2" and cut a 45-degree angle off of each end. With the angles facing inward, screw these two pieces onto the ends of the 36"X8 1/2" piece of MDO. This makes the carriage with spacers.

Step 9

Screw the 36"X1 1/2" MDO to the edge of the 36"X4" MDO at a 90-degree angle to create a guide lip. Attach this assembly to the support blocks of the carriage with screws. To make the opposite side of the guide, screw the 36"X2" MDO to the other side of the carriage. The circular saw's blade should pass through the gap as it follows the guide lip, but you may need to adjust the gap width for your particular saw.

Step 10

Now, with the saw against the guide lip and the blade in the gap, fix an opposite lip to keep the saw straight as it passing through the carriage by screwing on a 36"X1" strip of MDO on the opposite side.

Step 11

Flip this carriage over and measure down 7 inches from the top edge. Mark the midpoint of the width at this point and drill a 1/2" hole for the dowel.

Step 12

Removing the upper part of the carriage, place the base under the table and tap the 1/2" dowel through both the table and carriage, not allowing the dowel to stick out past the carriage blocks. Then, reattach the upper part of the carriage.

Step 13

Slide the carriage arm as far right as possible. Putting the speed square between the arm and the fence at a 45-degree angle, drill a 1/4" hole through the upper assembly and tabletop to secure the arm with a carriage bolt. Do the same at the 90-degree and 45-degree left angle to make repeated angle cuts.

Your circular saw table is ready to use. Place the wood to be cut against the fence. Line up the arm to the angle that you want. Put the circular saw in the guide arm with a depth set so that you will only cut 1/8" into the table. Make your cut. You can now make accurate angle cuts time after time with your circular saw table.

How to Tackle the Problem of Excessive Vibration in Your Table Saw?

Vibration is the problem that each and every person owning a table saw must face and conquer. Some persons prefer ignoring this problem and hoping that the issue will go away on its own.

Table Saw Tools

However, the end result is that the device vibrates to such an extent that it is next to impossible to use the same for even the simplest cutting task. Remember, dimensions are very important to manufacture the right furniture.

Table Saw Tools

It does not matter whether you are preparing a simple table or a shelf. You must have a keen lookout for the right size and you should cut the wood in such a manner that wastage is less and utilization is maximum.

In such a scenario, if you get a jagged or uneven cut and if you have to spend hours using a hand saw to manually fit the wood into shape, it does not make any sense to invest money in the table saw.

The smartest option is to find ways to reduce vibration so that you get the most precise cut possible. You must understand that there is no part of the table saw which vibrates except for the motor. As long as the belts and the pulley are oiled properly, the vibration of the motor should not be passed on to the blade.

Hence, if you make sure that the motor is isolated from the structure of the table saw, you can reduce the problem of vibrations to a large extent. Secondly, you can make sure that vibration dampening material is used to block the movement of vibrations from the motor to the device or the body of the table saw.

Thirdly, you should check whether the motor is a universally criticized for having this problem or whether you have fitted or installed it wrongly. Sometimes, using the wrong belt on the pulley is sufficient to lead to vibrations. You should also take a look at your electrical supply to ensure that this is not a factor that is causing problems and leading to vibration.

Finally, you should check the size of the blade and determine whether the level of work and capacity that you are undertaking is within the technical specifications of the table saw.

Overloading the motor is often a reason for the increasing vibrations. Further, poor maintenance can also be a factor. You should consider all these points and choose the best possible solution to reduce vibrations.

Hanging Drywall Using the Proper Drywall Tools

Hanging drywall correctly depends as much on using the right tools as it does on following the correct process. To hang dry wall correctly, the panels should first be placed on the ceiling. This allows them to be supported by the drywall panels that form the walls. When hanging the ceiling panels, it is best to use a dry wall jack. The easy to use, hand operated jack holds the panel firmly in place on a level plane, preventing it from cracking due to unequal pressure and ensuring that the panel rests directly against the ceiling joists.

Table Saw Tools

When the drywall is measured and ready to be affixed to the ceiling and wall joists, either ring shank nails or screws can be used to hold it in place. 1-1/4" screws or rink shank nails should be used for 1/2" drywall. Considering the sizable number of screws or nails used in most drywall projects, 12" apart on ceiling joists and 16" apart on wall joists, a screw gun is one of the most time saving drywall hand tools available. The screws or nails should be driven slightly beneath the surface of the drywall.

Table Saw Tools

Most screw guns automatically place the screw at its ideal depth. When using nails, a special drywall hammer with a rounded head is used to place the nails at their proper depth. A stud remover and installer kit is another drywall tool that can save time, especially when a misplaced screw needs to be removed without damaging the drywall.

Throughout the drywall hanging process, a level should be applied to each hung drywall panel to insure that it is not sloping. Even the smallest deviation from a level plane can cause a room seem bigger at one end, or make a drywall-lined column look as if it is "twisting" from top to bottom.

Once the drywall is secured to the studs, a metal corner bead is nailed to the outside corners to prevent them from chipping. The seams between the drywall panels are then "taped" over using joint tape to allow for a smooth coat of paint. Finally, joint compound is applied with a metal or plastic scraper to the corner beads, screw or nail depressions and other minor blemishes.

Once the joint compound is dry, it is smoothed with sandpaper to remove any raised portions. An electric sander is ideal in this situation. It requires less effort than hand sanding and its flat surface insures that the wall is sanded perfectly flat. After sanding, the drywall is ready for paint.

Hanging drywall is not a difficult process, especially when the wall joists and insulation are already in place. However, it is one of the most detail-oriented processes that a homeowner can undertake. If the measurements are not precise or the drywall is not level, there is nothing left to do but tear it out and start over again. Once the necessary drywall tools have been acquired and the process steps have been laid out, the key to success becomes using a tape measure and a level with great vigilance.
